Assessment of Auditory Processing Disorder

Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) is a listening disorder where children experience problems in the processing of auditory (sound) information. These children have normal hearing but have difficulties with

  • Hearing in background noise

  • Coping with unclear language or speech

  • Receiving auditory information

  • Storing and organising auditory information

  • Retrieving or operating on auditory information

  • Have reading, spelling and learning difficulties

  • Exhibit behavioural problems such as distraction and confusion

APD is often first noticed at school. the teacher may notice that the child is not performing to expected levels, is having difficulty following instructions, has poor memory and seems distracted and inattentive.

We assess APD at our Lindfield clinic

The audiologist undertakes a thorough assessment of a range of auditory perceptual skills to identify strengths and weaknesses. This information is detailed in a report that includes an explanation of the tests used, interpretation of the test results, suggested management strategies and possible referral to other specialists.

Intervention will target areas of weakness and improve the child's educational performance.
