Hearing Better in Background Noise The single most important expectation people have about hearing aids is that they will help them hear in noisy situations. Unfortunately many hearing aids can’t overcome or exclude background noise. Most new users complain that all sounds are too loud when they first start using a hearing aid. Speech and noise are not mutually exclusive. As clinicians, we counsel new users that (1) People with normal hearing hear noise that loud – it is a shock to hear clearly with new hearing aids, and (2) It is possible to relearn how to “tune-out” or ignore background noise with increased use of hearing aids. What if background noise stops you hearing speech? Improved technology and the inclusion of directional microphones in ‘new’ hearing aids can improve hearing in background noise. These tiny components allow you to ‘focus’ on what you want to hear. For example in a restaurant, the directional microphone helps you to hear the person in ‘front’ of you while de-emphasising the speech of those behind you. Directional microphones cannot be added to old aids retrospectively; they must be ordered with new aids. They can make a difference to your lifestyle. Your clinician can tell you whether you will benefit from this innovation. Back |
