What is the Program or Noise Switch?

The noise switch can be built into most “high end” hearing aids.  It in essence mutes most background noise.

Advantages

In most cases its use will allow better hearing in noisy situations.  With some configurations it will also make the hearing aid more transparent to loud noise ie. it will not amplify loud noise.  The switch for example could be used in shopping centres, buses, on busy roads, parties and anywhere where excessive noise stops clear hearing of the speech signal.

Disadvantages

The client has to learn how and when to use the noise switch.  It cannot rule out all noise, otherwise the speech signal will be blocked out as well.

Who can benefit

In order of decreasing benefit clients with a moderate loss will obtain the most benefit, but clients with mild and severe loss should also consider the benefits of the noise switch.
