What is the telecoil or t-coil?

The Telecoil is a very small switch on hearing aid, which enables the aid to pick up a signal within a very local broadcast area.  The Telecoil when switched appropriately will pick up a magnetic signal that is then converted to sound for amplification within the hearing aid.

Advantages

The client should be able to hear extremely well even in very noisy situations when a loop is present ie: microphone amplifier plus loop.

Disadvantages

The client must learn to use the switch appropriately otherwise the hearing aid sounds dead.  A loop and amplification system must be present.

Where can the Telecoil be used?

The Telecoil can couple up to a standard telephone to enable clear hearing of the speech signal from the phone.  The Telecoil can also be used in loop situations to hear TV, in the Cinema and in live theatre, in some churches in appropriate seating, and anywhere there is a loop presents such as meeting rooms, lecture theaters and other venues.

Who can benefit?

Any person who is fitted with a hearing aid, that is fitted with a Telecoil.  It is usually far more appropriate for those people with moderate, severe or profound hearing losses.
